Commissioned into the Cavalry in January 1969, Gen Raj Mehta retired from the Army in June 2006. He was involved in helping raise India’s first Liberal Education University; the Foundation for Liberal and Management Education (FLAME) from June 2006 to June 2012, serving as its CAO cum Faculty. This was his third direct contact with Educational teaching, having earlier been Faculty at the National Defence Academy, Khadakwasla (1981-84) and Faculty at Defence Services Staff College, Wellington (1993-97). He has been Director Shemrock since Feb 2018.
Awarded twice by the President of India for distinguished service in command in the War Zone, The officer has a Masters in English (PU, 1974-75), Defence Studies (Madras University, 1985), M Phil (National Security, Madras University, 1997) and M Phil (Global Security, Madras University, 2001). An author and columnist in media, he has written/edited several books on military matters. He has written over 600 published articles. He has a keen interest in all outdoor activity and games.
Raj believes that great education happens when the sacred triad of Student-Teacher-Parent synergises learning in word and in deed to make their children potentially world class. Liberal Education has a multi-disciplinary approach and allows holistic development in a child. All round development in mind, body and spirit with the triad generating and sustaining happiness in learning and unlearning and treating the process as serious fun is this 70 year old Generals advise to all.
